The NCRP Program facilitators from California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) will explore the importance of framing and frame analysis useful for both novice and experienced mediators. The facilitators will discuss how mediators often make the mistake of using disjunctive issue frames, which can serve to limit the discussion to standard adversarial or positional bargaining. The facilitators will demonstrate the value of conjunctive issue re-framing through catalyzing exercises. When parties commit to more responsive issues frames, they are able to access joint concerns at a deeper level. This allows parties to address more closely held value and identity-based concerns. Through robust issue-reframing, mediators are able to improve subjective well-being in addition to assisting the parties to conclude more sustainable and transformative agreements. This session also provides a good opportunity to come meet the NCRP faculty and get to know about the NCRP practitioner-focused MA program at CSUDH.
