Friday Night Welcome Reception
Installation & Rewards Dinner (6:00pm)

SCMA’s 30th Annual Fall Conference will start with a welcome reception installation dinner and awards ceremony. You will get the chance to mingle and network with fellow attendees over drinks (non-hosted) and tray passed hors d’oeuvres. Following, you will enjoy a tantalizing dinner while we honor USC Gould School of Law Professor Lisa Klerman, Esq., the recipient of the L Randolph Lowry Award (more information below).

Also, Kids Managing Conflict, SCMA’s Foundation Partner, will make a special presentation and present their Directors Award to Karen Crowley-Marks.

Finally, we will express our many thanks to outgoing SCMA President Dr. Jack R. Goetz, Esq. and our Immediate Past President Jason Harper. We are honored to have Retired California Court of Appeal Justice Candace Cooper install our incoming President Angela Reddock-Wright, Esq., along with our new SCMA Board Members.

This is an elegant event that promises to be a great kick-off for our annual conference. We hope to see you there.

L. Randolph Lowry Award

The SCMA presents the L. Randolph Lowry Award to a member of the dispute resolution community who has honored and inspired us through their passion and dedication to education in the field of dispute resolution.

We are proud to announce that the recipient of the 2018 L. Randolph Lowry Award is Professor Lisa Klerman of USC Gould School of Law.

Professor Lisa Klerman is a renowned clinical professor who has trained hundreds of USC Gould School of Law students in dispute resolution. After launching the law school’s Mediation Clinic over a dozen years ago, she served as the director of its ADR Certificate Program, and was the founding director of the Judge Judith O. Hollinger Program in Alternative Dispute Resolution. The Mediation Clinic courses that she designed and developed received national recognition in 2011 when the Ninth Circuit Judicial Council honored USC Gould with its prestigious ADR Education Award.

Hon. Candace Cooper (Ret.) – After nearly three decades of judicial experience works for JAMS, Cooper has earned a reputation as an arbitrator/mediator with a common-sense approach to resolving disputes. Clients describe her as bringing an ideal temperament and a wealth of legal expertise in handling complex, often highly publicized cases.

She served for nine years on the California Court of Appeal, Second District, her final assignment as Presiding Justice of Division Eight from 2001-2008, and as a Superior and Municipal Court judge prior to that. As a trial judge she handled a variety of assignments, ranging from court management, civil master calendar and civil trials to felony criminal and death penalty trials to juvenile dependency and delinquency cases.

During her noteworthy career, Justice Cooper made tremendous contributions to the legal community through her dedicated involvement in educational and professional associations. She served as president of the California Judges Association from 1988-1989. She has received numerous prestigious awards from professional and community groups throughout her career.
