Closing Plenary: Mediator as Educator

Woody has been an inspirational SCMA thought leader from our birth as a mediation organization.

In 1999, Woody was named Cloke-Millen Peacemaker of the Year, in 2017 we honored him with the SCMA President’s Award, and in 2020, we established the Forrest S. Mosten Star Award for Innovation and Achievement in Family Mediation whose honorees include Bill Eddy, Terri Breer, Constance Ahrons, Marvin Whistler, and Susan Guthrie.

In 2008, SCMA affirmed our policy of promoting mediation education through the Forrest S. Mosten Conflict Resolution Library Project with the first library established at the Western Justice Center in Pasadena.

In his closing plenary, Woody will show how mediators can use our mediation rooms (in person or virtual) as classrooms of client education and will discuss how mediators can be teachers of every aspect of the mediation process and develop education pedagogy and curricula to fully empower mediation parties and their aligned professionals through refined and nuanced protocols of informed consent.

Woody will close his plenary with his dream of mediators being proactive beacons of peacemaking to families, businesses, and teenagers in our communities and throughout the world by taking and implementing the Peacemaker Pledge and with the music and words of John Lennon, honor peacemakers on whose shoulders we now stand.
